• Selecting Preview approximates how your drawing will look when printed.
• Remember, when working on an illustration, AI only shows you the lines you are making, not the thickness of the line or any fill patterns.
• Choosing the Preview mode lets you see these parts of your illustration.
• Selecting Preview can take some time, since AI has to determine how to draw your illustration on the screen*.
• The more complex your drawing, the longer it can take
• As with the Template Only view, you can only scroll or zoom in/out in Preview mode.

One of the things that takes the most amount of time to Preview is any "special effect" type, such as type that has been stretched, rotated, filled with a shade of gray, or stroked with a different thickness of line.
When using these techniques, you may not want to use Preview... if you do, be prepared to wait!
